Tackling smoking prevalance - supporting social change in local communities

30% of Salford’s population smoke, equating to around 494 premature deaths per year. Working with NHS Salford, we developed range of interventions around the concept of Salford ‘Legends’- empowering local people who wanted to give up smoking to aspire to Legends status.

We developed the website www.salfordlegends.com to offer support to keep people across the city motivated (via video case studies top tips and a personal online tracker) and officially launched Salford Legends to media at The Lowry, with celebrity support from Salford Reds rugby league club. This coincided with high profile, targeted advertising on taxi cabs and bus stops.

Stop smoking advisors took a Community Health Bus out to a range of community venues, shopping centres and workplaces to offer information to shoppers and passers-by on smoking and more specifically, to offer brief interventions, and where appropriate, offer them a referral to the Legends Stop Smoking Service.

This work was underpinned by a wider programme of work with our Organisational Change team to improve service efficiencies and drive performance.
